I placed my order on 27th July so had to wait couple of months, speaking to other dealers anyone looking to buy now will have to wait till next Jan / Feb to receive their order :/

I went to a dealer in Northampton today. Lead time depending on variant is between 6 and 12 months. But I was also told that all VW outlets are franchises. There is no central stock register so I was told I had to contact dealers in the local area or nationally to find out if they had any cars available. Basically it's a total waste of time. Looks like VW have really messed this up and I'll be buying something else.

Have I been given the wrong info? Almost looks like the ID4 is vapourware.

@ sjcsystem.

Speaking from experience lol Im on my 3rd EV being the ID4, had a Renault and a Peugeot before, all the dealers are much the same.

Having researched which EV to buy for me and my family I looked at all the options, deals, delivery dates etc and and you will find most of them in the same boat, Initially i looked at a Skoda and like you wasn't prepared to wait till next year, i think i was lucky with my ID4 but still ended up waiting 3 months.

I ordered end of July, was told 4-5 months, now I have a provisional build week of week 1... "which is likely to move back". Just checked the paperwork and noticed that says Estimated handover 28/2/2022 !
It's the base model, 109kW Life Pure 52kWh in blue dusk, since you didn't ask.

So annoyed :(

I also ordered end of July, initially had a build week of something like 38, then 41, now pushed back to 51, and thats still only provisional.

If that happens (and I consider it highly unlikely), then considering the Christmas closedown etc, the earliest the car could be with me is early Feb, so we are nearly up to 6 months wait now. I strongly suspect that the wait is going to be more like a year to be quite honest. Again, I was quoted 3-4 months, so it seems they were being rather economical with the truth. My estimated handover was the end of this month.

The sales guy at VW is pretty pissed off with it all. Apparently he has a couple of Golf Rs that he sold in February this year that have now had their build dates moved to next year. He reckons they are prioritising EVs, but I dunno. We'll see.

The length of time has got me wondering what my options are though. At some point VW finance are going to come after me for the car I part exchanged for the ID4, and I am really not sure what happens then. I know that most manufacturers are having these problems (hence the soaring price of used cars) but are they all this bad?

I have an underlying concern that its slowly getting harder and harder to get stuff in via port to this country, and god knows what happens if they actually starting imposing customs this end.

This cannot be great for VW either, as by the sounds of things they have hardly sold any new cars this year.

I think that wait times for most things these days is down to all the factors we've seen in the news lately and the fact it's a brand new model. When I was looking at the ID4 at the end of March, my dealer had a 1st Edition in the showroom, which I decided to have, after having a couple of test drives. However, I was quite lucky for it to be still available, as it took me nearly two weeks to make a decision. I ended up driving it from the showroom on 19th April. If it's any consolation, when the Tiguan first came out, I waited six months for delivery, so things are still a bit similar.

I think the frustration lies in the lack of communication - its not that the Id4 is vapourware - it might be easier to take if it were!

People are definitely getting them, and in the UK as well, but it just appears to be a complete lottery, given utterly different outcomes on similarly timed orders.

Cheers for that info on the Tiguan - I have never waited more than a couple of months for an ordered (new) car, so it feels doubly frustrating. These are interesting times, however.

Mine was ordered last week of June, given a build week 38, moved to 44 then advised confirmed build week 45. 4 days ago received an update from dealer that it will be built first week of January - possible deliver February. So a 7 month with maybe delays for my order.

It's a question on how they prioritise the order. 😒 . Overall, we are in the same boat. ..

There are still a few out there. Found a dealer who was getting one in the next day and one week later I was picking it up. I was lucky that it was very close to the spec I was looking for - especially the tow bar.

Mine has now pushed back to week 4, still provisional.
I've suggested maybe they throw in a mains charger as compensation...
