Hi all

New to forum and have tried looking around for real world range for the 52kwh version. Found couple of good lease deals and seems like an upgrade from the e-golf I currently have.

Could anyone let me know what kind of range they are getting on motorway driving at normal speed (70mph) with heating etc. still unsure whether to go for 52kwh or wait around for a better price on the 77kwh

Thanks

You can get a good idea using the figures from the ev database (https://ev-database.uk/car/1273/Volkswagen-ID4-1st). Although the 77kwh will be a little heavier the figures should be close to the 55 kWh for your purposes:

Real Energy Consumption
between 208 - 428 Wh/mi
City - Cold Weather 308 Wh/mi
Highway - Cold Weather 428 Wh/mi
Combined - Cold Weather 358 Wh/mi
City - Mild Weather 208 Wh/mi
Highway - Mild Weather 335 Wh/mi
Combined - Mild Weather 266 Wh/mi
Indication of real-world energy use in several situations. Cold weather: 'worst-case' based on -10°C and use of heating. Mild weather: 'best-case' based on 23°C and no use of A/C. The energy use will depend on speed, style of driving, climate and route conditions.

So using the full capacity of 55000Wh/428 = 129 miles for the worst case scenario (note they are using -10C so pretty chilly!) or 103 miles if charging to 80%. Best case would be 55000/335 = 164 miles or 131 miles at 80%. So depending on how you drive and our present weather I would expect around 150 miles. These figures correlate to my experience with the 77kwh battery where with the present weather I can rely on 250 miles but that is combined driving.

Oops, should have use 52000/428 =121miles and 52000/335 = 155 miles so that may mean only about 140 miles as a realistic figure.

Thanks. About 30 miles lower than expected in that case although would be a good run around car. They should really include the 3 pin charger in the 52kwh

Ordered a "granny charger" with my order for an ID.4 52kwh Pure last November. Did not know that uk models did not include this until reading article on this site. Found that this was the cheapest way of getting one. No sign of a build date in the neat future

Seen some on eBay and Amazon. Not sure I would trust some of the Chinese ones but screw fix have a branded one too. How much do VW charge?

If I remember the figure was £180 if purchased with the initial order for the vehicle, much more if purchased as a post delivery part.

Just checked and the VW 6m option now £189 + vat.

Screwfix have a 10m cable at £169 incl vat.

The other factor to compare is warranty as this could be key given the limited use across the globe thus far. Probably very annoying to wake up and find it hasn’t charged overnight.

Surely avoid Chinese options. Imagine the possible damage for the sake of a few quid?

I bought the Screwfix 10m cable before I had my home charge point installed. I've had no problems with it and it is a well known brand - Masterplug.

I ordered ID 4 52kwh with heat pump on Nov 21 without test driving just by looking at the size of cabin and boots, and reviews of how great the charging curve is after e-tron.

Now the build date is estimated on week 39 of 2022. Couldn't wait that much long when facing with a year depreciation on current car and when the time comes to sell ID 4 there might be other cars with bigger battery and cheaper price for new. So not looking good for 52Kwh battery to sell in 5 years time from now.

I went for heat pump hoping I could get near to 77kwh. But the heat pump reviews (nextmove deutschland)/for VW stating it used more energy or not noticeable difference to the one without.

I test drove 77Kwh Max 204 with 20 inch wheels and a bit heavier than 52, recently only on about 4 miles of 40 zone and the rest on motorway. On my petrol after a few mins of 23`C fan speed 3 I had to bring down to 21.5`C otherwise it will become too hot. But on this ID4 test drive I even put 26.5`C for the entire cabin with fan speed 4 and felt it just at the temp of 21.5`C on my petrol. The pics were taken when car was stationary and you can see heater is pulling from 2.5 to 3.5, so hoping if heat pump only need to use 1/3 then it will still use about 2.8 to 3.08 on 52Kwh with heat pump on 18 inch wheels I hope and wish. So its not bad if it can get 2.8-3.08 at 7`C outside temp and dry, but the heating is a let down, didn't feel the cabin was hot enough as my petrol on 23`C. The way I test drove was quick acceleration, GPS speed showed was at the speed limit and a few of overtaking at higher speed. Tried D and B but couldn't notice that much difference.

So for 52 with heat pump I'm hoping 3 m/kWh and without heat pump about 2.9 m/kWh. So on a long journey you can charge up to 85% before the charging speed dropped below 50KWH at 120 or more charger. Minus 20 miles of range to find next charging point is about 13% 6-7Kw. Then left with about 72% just about 37KW and looking at 105-110 range at 7`C outside temp with dry road. Its like after 90-120 mins driving you need to find a charging point. I've been at Ionity points and noticed almost full most of the time apart from night time. So about 35mins to charge at 120 or higher charger and if not lucky then queuing time for charger. On 50 KW charger it could take about 45-50 mins to 80% charge plus queuing time if necessary.

For me 52 KW seems like not good enough for long journey unless charging infrastructure improves with growing EVs on the road.
