Good Evening

Do any ID4 owners charge from 3 pin UK plug? I intend to have a 7kw charger installed at home but have permission to charge of mains power while I’m at work. What kind of mileage/charge will I get over 8-9hrs?

The vw charger is rated at 10A. I get around 6 miles per hour which equates to around 2 kW. So 8-9 hours should give around 50 miles of range.

We also charge from a 3 pin plug. Initially we were going to install a wall charger but as the dealer threw in the 3 pin charger, we started with this and have kept going with it. Our life style means we rarely need to charge from say 20% to 80% overnight. The cost of installing the charger which we wanted to use with Solar and Off peak rates, additional electrical work and having to change our Energy package meant we would not break even for 3 years plus. So we have stayed with the 3 pin and never had to use a local fast charger to top up. But it all depends on your journeys.

We see between 2 and 3 kW (6-8 miles added per hour) on the ID phone app when charging.

That’s reasonable, I’ve also had three pin lead included with the new car. I’ll probably have fitted a 7kw charger do to the mileage I do. I’ll probably never need to use the fast chargers.

In case it helps, we have just bought a 10 meters type 2 three pin charger from a national supplier of screws and fixings. It comes with two years warranty. Cheaper and longer than VW version, and allegedly not from China.

I got a 6 to 13a 3 pin charger which I have been using. 13a gets an average of 10 mph, which is enough for my daily use. I have also tried to charge the car from 8% to 100% just to stress test the charger 😁 and it took almost 17hrs.

I’ll primarily be using a 7kw charger at home to fully charge. 3. Pin will just be to top up while I’m at work 👍🏻

I promised an update after my first charge experience:

Fast 7.7kw charge worked well and to spec with 4kw in 30 minutes. Then used the three pin cable supplied by VW and it wouldn’t fit our outside socket with weather proof casing. The actual plug and cable thickness are too large to fit inside the casing. By contrast, the screw fix 10m cable has smaller plug and cable, so fitted inside the casing fine allowing complete closure against weather conditions.

To be clear the VW supplied 6m three pin cable worked fine via an inside garage socket without casing.

Info: the car appeared to detect slower cable and so invoked the “reduced amps” setting automatically, but not sure it reverted afterwards so will need to check before using 7.7kw cable.

All in all, very acceptable first charge… and before the April 1st price increases.
👍
