I have just taken delivery of an ex-demonstrator ID4 1st edition and very much want to take up the advertised optional extra of a VW tow bar…however my supplying VW dealer said it couldn’t be done as there was no tow bar that would fit any ID4 1st edition produced after wk. 47, 2020 (which all UK spec ones are)…anyone succeeded in getting one fitted or had one refused? I’ve found a VW dealer who say they can and will fit one, but the part is on “back order”….

I came across this issue when I ordered my ID.4 via a lease company. It's a 1st Edition and the lease company asked around UK VW dealers for one in the colour I wanted, fitted with a towbar. As none were available, I had to wait for a new build ID.4 1st Edition with a factory-fitted towbar. Back in March, lead time for a new build was 16 weeks, may have changed since then. Happy to say that it is a neat arrangement that works well. There is a release/stowage switch in the boot and the Infotainment system recognises when a trailer is attached. I use a small, 1.5m x 1.0 m trailer to move garden rubbish and transport a lawnmower+accessories and I have not noticed any reduction in range when towing (typically 5 to 25 mile round trips).

Good info, thanks; a trailer is exactly want I want it for…I have a 750kg unbraked trailer and I’m trying not to mess up my nice new car! I have a nasty feeling this “back order” on parts on going to stretch out indefinitely…will update this forum when/if anything happens…

Update: Was able to get the tow bar fitted in the end by my local VW dealer (Lowestoft) with no dramas and works perfectly…

Can you give details of towbar you had fitted please. Is it the drop down one?how much did it cost. My id4 should arrive in March and I wasn’t able to get one fitted as an extra. Any help would be appreciated.

I've had a quote of £1300 by my local dealer to supply and fit. O have a 850kg caravan I wish to tow.

Sure - it’s the electric version, exactly as per factory fitted and I’m thrilled with it, despite the eye-watering £1219 price to fit it…

Cheers mrcrispi. That is a bit steep but I think it’s probably worth it.

We got our ID.4 1st Edition in May 2020. As part of the purchase deal I got them to throw in a towbar. It eventually arrived some weeks after took ownership. It took them a couple of days to fit it, but no problems (nice electric system).

Could tow our caravan with it (850kg), but done our European travelling, so selling caravan but using towbar for bike carrier and occasional trailer. Wouldn't expect good range with a caravan.
