Heat pump on 1st Edition

I was lucky enough to get my 1st Ed. back in April, specc'd with a heat pump. Other than on the order sheet, how can I physically check that there actually is a heat pump on the vehicle (ie what am I looking for under the bonnet in very layman's terms please) and how will I ever know whether it's working, come the colder weather, with no other car's kWh to compare it with?
